The Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in the afternoon to Rafael Núnez International Airport (CTG) where you will be greeted by a driver and escorted to the stunning Hotel Charleston Santa Theresa. Take an evening tour of the historic walled city and gain insight into Cartagena’s unique and exciting history which involves tales of conquistadors, stolen gold, the battle against invaders, and the influence of the Catholic church. Afterward, get a taste of authentic Colombian cuisine during our “Welcome Dinner” at one of Cartagena’s many divine restaurants.

Day 2: Begin the day with a private Colombian coffee tasting before enjoying some leisure time on your own to explore. Let the sounds of Latin Caribbean music, the clopping of horse-drawn carriages, and the fragrance of abundant tropical flora set the mood as you wander the streets between vibrantly-colored colonial buildings. Purchase fresh fruit from the local Palenqueras or visit one of the many museums before joining the rest of the group for an afternoon literary tour focused on Colombia’s own Nobel prize winning author, Gabriel García Marquez. Finally, watch the sun set over the Caribbean Sea as you enjoy cocktails at the famous Café del Mar and stroll to a nearby, upscale restaurant for dinner.

Day 3: Shopping in Cartagena is a great deal of fun, and for the most part, many things that you might want to buy are very inexpensive. Join the Shopping tour to get an idea of what to buy, and how much to pay. Afterward, you’ll have the opportunity to sample the many flavors of Cartagena through a guided Food and Culture tour. In the evening, let loose and embrace the lively Latin energy in the air by partaking in a traditional salsa class. Once again, we’ll end the evening with another fabulous group dinner.

Day 4: San Basilio de Palenque is a small village located in the foothills of the mountains about an hour south of Cartagena. Founded in the early 1600s by escaped slaves, it is considered the first free town in the Americas. A guided visit to San Basilio de Palenque will offer our group insight into Afro-Colombian culture, its significance, and its influence on Colombia. Following this immersive tour, we will return to Cartagena by mid-afternoon to enjoy more solo leisure time to relax - perhaps by the rooftop pool of the Hotel Charleston Santa Theresa - before gathering again for dinner.

Day 5: We will allow ample free time on our final day in Cartagena to allow you to enjoy some time alone. Spend it relaxing at the fabulous spa located in the hotel, the rooftop pool, or a tropical beach-club. Perhaps you’ll choose to walk along the city walls and take in views of the old city, Bocagrande (the “Miami Beach” of Cartagena), historic forts, and the Caribbean sea. Wander the streets absorbing the sights, smells and sounds before meeting the rest of the group in the late afternoon for an informative Colombian Emerald tour, followed by an authentic Colombian cooking class which will serve as our “Farewell Dinner.” Close the night with cocktails and music under the stars in the Plaza Santa Theresa.
