Most people viewing this post will think,"Oh Astrid is all alone eating. This doesn't look like fun." Well that evening was what I call a "magic moment." It was my last night in St Petersburg after a whirlwind ten day trip to Russia and I decided to spend the evening relaxing by drinking champagne and eating caviar in the Grand Hotel's famous "Caviar Bar." Much to my dismay, it was closed for renovation. Disappointed, I left and the maitre de' of the hotel's L'Europa restaurant approached me and asked if I would like to have dinner. He said that night it offered a special three course pre-fixe meal and that he would set a "table for one" for me in a nice spot. I agreed. What unfolded was "pure delight." The restaurant's decor was exquisite with candelabras on all of the tables. In addition at the end of the large dining room was a small, raised stage. During the evening different classical performing artists performed. I listened to a string quartet, a piano sonata, several opera arias and the "piece de resistance" was a ballet "pas de deux." The food and two glasses of wine were wonderful and the attentive service was first class all for $78.00!! The evening was so special I didn't want it to end. Next Tuesday I will return to St Petersburg and the memorable Grand Hotel. Unfortunately, I have so many things planned I will not be able to dine again in the L'Europa restaurant but I do intend to have caviar and champagne in the Caviar Bar. Can't Wait!!
